Why You Should Buy Cigar Box Guitars in the UK
Cigar box guitars have a fascinating history. Originally born out of necessity during tough economic times, these guitars were made from empty cigar boxes and scrap wood. Today, they’re celebrated for their distinctive sound and handcrafted charm.
Buying a cigar box guitar in the UK means you’re supporting local artisans who pour their heart and soul into every instrument. These guitars are not mass-produced; each one is unique, often made with reclaimed wood and carefully selected materials. This means you get an instrument with character and a story.
Plus, UK makers often offer customisation options. Want a specific wood type, number of strings, or a particular finish? You can usually request it. This personal touch is something you won’t find with factory-made guitars.
Here’s why I think you should consider buying one:
Unique sound: Cigar box guitars have a raw, bluesy tone that’s hard to replicate.
Handcrafted quality: Each guitar is made with care and attention to detail.
Affordable: Compared to traditional guitars, these can be more budget-friendly.
Community: Buying locally connects you with workshops and fellow enthusiasts.

Tips for Playing and Caring for Your Cigar Box Guitar
Once you’ve got your cigar box guitar, you’ll want to keep it in top shape and get the most out of it. Here are some practical tips:
Tuning: Most cigar box guitars have 3 or 4 strings. Standard tunings include open G or open D, but feel free to experiment.
Playing style: These guitars are perfect for slide playing. Use a glass or metal slide to get that classic blues sound.
Maintenance: Keep your guitar clean and dry. Wipe it down after playing to prevent dirt buildup.
String replacement: Change strings regularly to maintain tone quality. Use strings designed for the number of strings your guitar has.
Storage: Store your guitar in a case or on a stand away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
